The New Baby!

Well, it's official! The new baby is here :) My little, soon to be named, niece was born at 8:55am Sunday morning. She weighed in at 8lbs 2oz, twenty inches, with and lots and lots of dark black hair. She's precious, and I can't wait to see her again tomorrow evening when she comes home from the hospital. I'm sure having your own kids is great and all, but I really think that being an aunt is the best thing in the world. It's all the fun, very little of the responsibility of parenting. Sure, i get bossed around everyone now and then. Like when Mathew orders me to "talk to his toes." That's actually what he wants...he wants me to have a conversation with his toes. So, I do. Anyways, I'll gladly have a conversation with his toes to hear my little two year old nephew tell me that I'm his best friend. Which is another thing he said this weekend. "You're my best friend Ammai." So what if in his next sentence he said that Thomas the Train was his best friend. For a minute, I was his best friend and it was awesome. I can't wait to become the new baby's best friend too.

I'll go ahead and admit that there was a small blip in the near perfect morning of my soon to be named niece's birth. Caught up in the excitement of entering the room and seeing the new baby, I walked over to give Cheryl a hug and tell her congrats, good job, cute baby, etc. I guess I didn't notice the small table next to Cheryl's hospital bed. The movable table was empty, except for a large styrofoam cup of ice and ice cold water. Somehow en route to Cheryl, I managed to knock over the cup of ice and ice water. Most of it fell to the ground, but probably a good quarter cup of ice landed on Cheryl or in her bed. Just what every woman wants after going through labor -- being forced to lay in a bed soaked with ice cold water. Cheryl was, of course, totally gracious and kind about it. She almost convinced me that her comfort level was not affected. What a great mommy. I would have believed her if not for the shivers. There are lots of babies being born right now - everyone please watch out for those tricky movable tables and styrofoam cups.
