Day 2, Tuesday, Nov. 25th

Honeymoon Day 2, Tuesday, Nov. 25th

We landed in Rome at around 9am, excited to have the whole day to explore. We took a taxi, driven by a woman, to our first Italian hotel – Hosanium Palace. I have never had a female taxi driver before. Have you? Though not overly friendly, she was extremely competent. She somehow managed to wiggle her tiny car through the senseless maze of Roman streets. We quickly learned that streets in Rome hardly ever have signs with their names. If you are lucky, a building on a street corner will have at least one of the intersecting streets’ names engraved into it. And if you are especially lucky, there will be a streetlight that allows you to read the engraved name. Otherwise, you are on your own, left to cross your fingers and hope that the street you think you are on is actually the street you are on. The Democrat and I were about fifty – fifty on our accuracy, but we managed to make it back home each night.

We spent a lot of Day 2 walking. We walked all over the Roman Forum, saw the ruins of the ancient Roman Parliament, Cesar’s palace, the Pantheon, the Coliseum, many other amazing monuments. Everything was so enormous, historic and impressive. Words and pictures don’t do it justice – but it was incredible to look around and imagine what life was like when these places and people were in their prime.

In the evening, we walked down the Via del Corso, into the trendy, urban, high-end shopping part of Rome. This is the area where People Magazine captures pictures of people like Justin Timberlake walking out of the Chanel store. We had no Justin Timberlake sighting, but saw plenty of other shoppers. We were into this area for only one reason – food! The Democrat and I have realized that we are going to come back from this trip weighing at least 5 extra pounds (or since we’re still in Italy…about 11 kilograms heavier). There are just too many temptations as you walk through these Italian streets. Pizza, Gelato, and Coffee are everywhere you look. And The Democrat and I love these three food groups. And these are just eaten in-between our meals. Besides the daily pizza, gelato, and coffee, we have still managed to squeeze in at least three full meals a day. Like I said, at least 5 pounds heavier.

Pizza eaten: Slimy Mushroom & Prosciutto (Mushrooms are my all-time favorite pizza topping, but for some reason these Italian mushrooms are really squishy. The mushrooms emitted a strange mushroom juice on my pizza. It was weird, but I was too hungry to mind.)

Gelato eaten: Tiramisu & Chocolate in a cup. (Fabulous!)
